BHP Billiton’s sites utilise a diverse mix of mobile equipment, light vehicles and surface and underground mobile equipment. This diversity requires careful management to minimise safety risks. One significant risk is the use of normal commercial vehicles, particularly on-site alongside the heavy equipment needed in mining operations, but also off-site in normal road use. Selection and use of these “light vehicles” is governed by BHP Billiton standards included in its Fatal Risk Control Protocol (FRCP).
BHP Billiton has adopted Acumentum’s ScenarioBuilder™ product to support staff and contractors in selecting, outfitting and using light vehicles both on- and off-site.
