User Interface
The user interface of an online application is critically important in helping users achieve their purpose. Getting the user interface design of an online application right is essential because there is often no one else available to guide the user through the application.
There are several elements required to create an effective and efficient user interface:
- Structure
- Navigation
- Usability
- Visual design
When these are done well the user will be successful.
Structure
The elements of a page must be organised logically. Navigation, functions and content should be placed in easily accessible areas where users are most likely to expect them. Placement needs must be clear and without ambiguity so that users can quickly access what they need. This creates a sense of hierarchy that shows which items are most importance.
Navigation
Efficient navigation is essential for any online application. Users demand quick and easy access to what they want. Menus, buttons and links must be obvious. Navigation tools must be implicit. When a user clicks a button they should already know exactly where they are about to go.
Usability
Usability is all about helping users to understand, learn, use and benefit from the application. Acumentum conducts usability testing with real users to determine how successfully users interact with applications and to also establish whether there are any areas that require further improvement. By evaluating the responses of users we are able to refine applications to help the user better achieve their purpose. Find out more about Usability Testing.
Visual Design
The visual design provides an application with an overall ‘look and feel’ to help users easily interact with the application. This is achieved by reflecting the corporate identity of the organisation and making the user interface effective and appealing. Find out more about Visual Design.
